Mowing Height by Season — When to Raise or Lower the Blade

One height year-round is simple, but a little seasonal adjustment can help your lawn handle stress and look better. In Central Illinois, that usually means staying at a good height most of the year and lowering gradually into winter. Here’s a quick guide.

The baseline: 3–3½ inches

For most cool-season lawns in our area, about 3 to 3½ inches is the sweet spot. That height:

  • Shades the soil and holds moisture.
  • Helps the grass compete with weeds.
  • Reduces stress in heat and drought.

See how to mow like a pro for why this height and how to maintain it.

Spring

As the lawn greens up, start at your normal height (3–3½ inches). Don’t scalp to “clean up” winter—if the grass is very long, mow high first, then bring it down over the next cut or two. For more, see spring lawn prep.

Summer

Keep the same height—or even raise the blade slightly (e.g., 3½ inches) during hot, dry spells. Taller grass shades the soil and uses water more efficiently. For drought tips, see drought-tolerant lawn care. Never remove more than about one-third of the blade in a single mow.

Fall

Stay at your normal height until growth slows. Then, for the last few mows of the season, lower the blade gradually (e.g., by one notch each time) so the lawn isn’t left long going into winter. Too-long grass can mat down under snow and encourage disease. Don’t drop to the lowest setting in one shot—step it down. Full fall routine in fall lawn care.

Winter

No mowing when the grass is dormant. Avoid heavy traffic on frozen or soggy turf. For the full calendar, see our seasonal lawn care calendar.

Why it matters

  • Too short anytime = weaker roots, more weeds, more stress in heat and cold.
  • Too long going into winter = matting, moisture trapping, and possible disease.
  • Consistent, appropriate height = healthier lawn and a cleaner look. That’s the standard we follow at Wink’s for every mow.
